ProChat Beta Test Chatroom : Bugs, fixes, status updates
« on: Aug 21, 2013, 08:38:03 PM »

Chat status: Available

Known Issues
  • Switching subaccounts while logged in to the chat logs members out of the chat. (Example: Logged in as Mike in chat, Mike switches to Mark on the forum. Mike is logged out.)
  • Logging in or out of the forum, or switching subaccounts sends C_LANG22 into the chat (old, ongoing bug w
  • For anonymity's sake, there are issues with multiple log ins over multiple browsers. If you are worried about sharing your SN's or who knows who you play, it would be best to stick to one SN in the chat at a time. I am very sorry about this, and am looking into how to fix this asap.
  • Currently unless you run the chat in another browser window, (IE & Firefox, Chrome and FireFox etc) members can only be logged in to one account at a time.
  • Members are auto logged into the chat due to SMF integration. AKA: If you are logged in as Mike but would rather log into the chat as Mark, there is no option to do that currently other than logging out Mike, switching to Mark on the forums, and then logging back in to the chat room.
  • Chat room names with three spaces in the name have third space replaced with +. Example: This Chat Room looks like: "This Chat+Room." Fixed?
  • Youtube videos create odd scroll bar that does not disappear unless chat refreshes
  • Adblock for FireFox/Google Chrome slows chat to a crawl. Please turn off ad block for the chat room, thank you! You can also alternatively turn it off for GR entirely. There are no ads to block here :)

Chatroom works well on a samsung galaxy s3 android phone. Some sizing issues after sending text, but suspect it's my phone and the keyboard.

To do
Add ability to highlight/select text and toggle bold or italics state, either by shortcut or clickable buttons - Awaiting supportStress test chat room. Current limit is 100 members. Would love to get around 50 in chat at same time to see how it runs.
Change chat sounds

If you encounter any issues or problems in the chat that are not listed above, please reply here and include times, dates, what you were doing before the issue happened, what browser you use and screen shots if possible.

Monday, August 6th: It appears that the spaces in room names issue (Names longer than two words randomly have + or _ added to them. Example: Look a+Room or Look a_Room) has been fixed.

August 26th: Chat sounds have been altered (hopefully) from an annoyingly loud PLEEP BLEEP to a much softer blee-bloo in order not to frighten anyone else who may ::cough:: have left their volume turned up.

As always, chat sounds can be turned completely off in the settings options.

August 20th: Asked support in ProChatrooms support forum (Which is, of course, restricted to purchasers only) about allowing multiple SMF accounts logged in multiple times, from one browser (ie tabs.) Their only reply to this on August 22nd was:
Quote
.. a) if the chat rooms integrated users will always be prompted to login to the forum first before they can login to the chat room & b) you would need to use 2 different browsers to be logged into the chat room twice using the same computer (eg. chrome and firefox, or IE and firefox, etc).

Unsure why. Flashchat (a $5 script, Ajax chat & several other free to use chats can do this. Will continue pestering them about it.

Asked support about getting rid of the C_LANG22 that shows up in the chat when a user is logged in the chatroom with one SMF account, but switches to another when on the forum. Switching accounts while logged into the chat, logs a user out and sends this error. I was asked by support to share any errors in the chat error logs. There were two. I did on August 23rd. Waiting response.

Asked support in same thread today (August 27th) about The possibility of coding the use of highlighting specific text and then using Ctrl+i or Ctrl+b to toggle italics or bold states for font. Or if not possible to code to short cut, some way of having these as clickable buttons that turns selected chat italics/bold when clicked.

Currently awaiting more from support. Sorry I cannot do anything else and will update this as soon as I hear anything.

A few users have noted that random IM's appear to be bugged where they cannot open IM's/Minimize/Maximize/Close buttons disappear.

The ability to log in multiple names at the same time is not available. You could attempt to log in one SN in one type of browser, and another SN in another browser--but this is not garunteed to work properly. The chat may display your text as coming from the wrong name.

For anonymity sake and for those of you who do not like to share their SN's (which is 100% okay!) it would be best to make sure you log into the chat on one name at a time.

I am so sorry for this inconvenience and have contacted support about this. Thank you for your patience!

Currently, spaces in chat room names have glitched again. You cannot use ANY spaces. I am so sorry for this inconvenience and will work to fix it as soon as possible.

ALL HAIL KALAMERE ONCE AGAIN! You may now create user chat rooms with spaces.

I've found that if I change from one SN to the other, it carries over the same colour, font and size I was using before. This is EXTREMELY annoying, and very troublesome if I want to keep who I am a secret when using a different SN.

Is there ANYWAY the mighty Code God Kalamere can do something about that? Or maybe something from the chat itself we can do? Because trying to find the right colour for my char again is very annoying...

Can you place this in a reply to the Chat bugs thread we have stickied to the top of this forum too? :) Thank you.

I sent to support:
Good Evening, Jeff! I have several questions that cover customizing (still, sorry!) and a few about bugs/issues.

CUSTOMIZING:
1.) Is it possible to code a /back 1, or /back 10 command which users can type into the chat which will show the last (up to 30) lines sent into a room? JUst the room chat, no private chat or whispers.

For instance, if I were type /back 10, the chat room would then spit back the last 10 lines that were sent in a room.

2.) Is it possible to code or add a keyboard short cut--such as Ctrl+i and Ctrl+b that toggles font italics or bold as a user types, so that users can specify only certain parts of their text being bold or italics, instead of all of it?

3.) I have the modification Subaccounts installed on SMF. Subaccounts lets my members create many other accounts, connected to a "main" account. When users switch to a subaccount while being logged into the chat, the room sends their name as well as the message: C_LANG22. Is there anyway to remove this?
3.a) Is there any way I can allow my members to log in with multiple SMF names that does NOT require the use of different browsers?

4.) Is it possible to colorize chat messages such as : ***GreaterRealms has entered the chat.*** to make them more distinct than regular text?

____________________
BUGS/ISSUES

1.) Some users who go idle in the chat for a period of time/their computers go to sleep, the chat appears to log them off. However, they are not actually logged out of the chat, they are invisible-- can still see what is going on in the chat but no one IN the chat can actually see them.

2.) I have one user currently using Firefox that mentions the longer they stay in chat, the slower and slower it gets. Do you have any advice I can give them to help them improve their experience?

3.) Youtube videos when shared leave a random scroll bar in the middle of the chat screen that can only be removed by refreshing or logging out or back in. Can you tell me how to fix this?

4.) We have several users who mention they receive PrivateChats from other members but cannot open them. The Minimize/Maximize/Close buttons are also not there. I have a screen shot here:http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h208/elf_fu/Screenshots/userlist_zpsa06bc330.png

I am very sorry to pester you again, and appreciate any answers you can give us. Thank you!

On Sept 02 they replied:
Quote
Hello Melissa,

Please allow me to answer your questions in turn,

CUSTOMIZING:

1) This feature is not available at this time. The chat room does have the ability to display X old messages upon logging into the chat room by editing the setting below in the file 'prochatrooms/includes/config.php',

/*
* display last messages
* 0 - do not show
* 10 - show last 10 messages
*/

$CONFIG['dispLastMess'] = '0';

2) We have already noted your post in our community forum regarding the ability to edit messages so that certain parts contain different style settings. Although this feature is currently not available we are discussing introducing this in the future.

3) Our software integration has been tested with default SMF installations (using 1 member per account, not including allowing members to create subaccounts) so we will look into this to see if we can support this feature.

3a) It is not possible to use the same browser session and login to the chat room multiple times.

4) The ability to colorize room entry messages is not included with the default software. We are considering this as an option for the future for greater flexibility.

BUGS/ISSUES

Thank you for reporting your findings and we will investigate your reports.

Can i ask if the users who are experiencing issues are using subaccounts or are logged in multiple times under different accounts?

Regards,
Jeff

Seeing Chat in a different room when in lobby.

Occurred while testing a Sub account fix. Was logged onto my main account in the chat room, and on my sub-account on the forums in a separate browser tab. Firefox 23.0.1. (Main Storm, Sub Sionn)

Ivanya and I were in a chatroom we created and it disappeared somehow while we were both still in it?

The chat froze for everyone.

It should be working now.

Too late, back down again. Sorry about this!

1) This feature is not available at this time. The chat room does have the ability to display X old messages upon logging into the chat room by editing the setting below in the file 'prochatrooms/includes/config.php',

/*
* display last messages
* 0 - do not show
* 10 - show last 10 messages
*/

$CONFIG['dispLastMess'] = '0';
this was re: the /back ## request
We can enable that if you want, but this would then occur at every room entry time.  eg:  You enter a room and automatically see the last 10 lines of chat.   I leave to you to determine whether or not this is desirable.

Quote from: Jeff
2) We have already noted your post in our community forum regarding the ability to edit messages so that certain parts contain different style settings. Although this feature is currently not available we are discussing introducing this in the future.
This is a partial answer in regard to being able to bold/italic/underline given parts of a chat message rather than the whole thing.  What he doesn't address is whether or not they could create a key binding for control+b to bold the full text line (since part isn't an option), as opposed to having to open the font menu.  Not sure if you want to address that to him specifically.

Quote from: Jeff
4) The ability to colorize room entry messages is not included with the default software. We are considering this as an option for the future for greater flexibility.
An "official" fix would include an option for you in the admin panel to configure the color and such.  If you just want a hack that puts it in place and requires fiddling directly with the code to change it in the future, I imagine this would not be too difficult to do.

There's always a few people who had the "can't see anyone else in chat/any text," bug--but today I am seeing a lot of chatter from members in the chat that they log in and see 0 people online and cannot see chat at all; one user reported switching from IE, AOL to Firefox in order to see it.

Personally, I am now having issues using Chrome for any length of time--after an hour or two the chat and the site lags out and I do not know if it's connected to the color change or new cookie(s) but, that's what I've got, currently.

I had it happen over the weekend, so it's not new, and I can't think of how either the color selector or a cookie change would bog it down any.  The color selector should actually improve performance overall.  That said, I won't rule it out.  We'll see if overall people think it's worse over the next couple days vs. the last few and if so then we can revert the changes to see if things get better again.

We should also take a closer look at what the chat package is doing with the database.  If it isn't going back and deleting things periodically, we could end up impacting performance based on dataset size.

Let's try this logged in the right name!

I've been optimizing database tables--messages and rooms, as well as deleting rooms that are older than week by hand. But learned DO NOT TOUCH user tables (lol.)

Maybe that is exactly the problem instead of the color thing. Hopefully people will report in over the weekend.

Here is a summary of everything (so far I think!)

This is a list of bugs we're currently experiencing I am getting ready to gather and hand over to prochat. If I have missed a bug that's been reported or you've found, please let me know:

  • Some users experience the chat slowing down the longer they remain logged in. Browsers are FF, Chrome and IE
  • Some users experience "ghosting," where in logged in, either they cannot see any members online in the chat (despite Who's Chatting displaying members in the chat), cannot see any chat, or take upwards of 5-10 minutes to finally "appear" online and see people. (IE, Fire Fox, Chrome, Safari, and AOL)
  • Some users names when leaving the chat by navigating away or closing the window, instead of choosing "disconnect," remain in the chat room list anywhere from 1-4 minutes.
  • Users switching between subaccounts on the forum, forgetting to log themselves out of chat, send the error: C_LANG22 into the room
  • Videos shared in the chat room create a floating grey scroll bar that remains at the bottom of the chat, above the text area, long after the video has scrolled by.
  • Some Instant Messenger (Private Chats) lose their maximize, minimize buttons - especially too long names.
  • Some IM's (Private Chats) come up completely blank on occasion
  • Some users who log in to the OOC Lounge/Default Chat room experience seeing chat room text from OTHER rooms they are not logged into! For instance: user logged into The Lounge, but sees text from The Brazen Wench chat room instead.
Features we would like to see/know if it's possible to code:
  • The ability to highlight text and make it bold or italics.
  • If it is at least possible to move the Bold and Italics from the Font menu and make them their own separate buttons or create key bindings for them to alleviate the need of opening the font section at all
  • The ability to have multiple SMF forum accounts logged in at once (Like the Flashchat offered by Tufat can do, or Ajax Chat, or phpChat), and/or at least some sort of point in the right direction to see if could be hand coded by someone who knows what they are doing
Am I missing anything? Is there a bug I forgot to mention? Please let me know!

And as always, the more information you can provide for a bug you experience: time, date, screen shot, what you were doing before and after, what browser you are using and any extensions/plug ins you have for that browser helps us help the support, and eventually to fix the bugs--which helps you!

Thank you!

Ask if they could set up key bindings for those, so that control+b (or i or u) would alleviate the need to bring up a window at all.

For what it's worth, if they tell you no but you think it's worth having that stuff on the bar (and you're willing to live without some of the other items on the bar), I'm pretty sure I could do it.  The keybinding stuff is harder though, so it would be best if they did it.

Hello Melissa,

Please accept my sincere apologies, i thought i had responded to this email to thank you for the detailed report and we would look into your findings (this would be the reason for what would appear to be a delay in our response and hopefully helps to clear up any confusion).

We are extensively testing version 7 based on your findings and hope to be able to provide you with a solution for your issues.

Regarding your comment,

"--Some users names when leaving the chat by navigating away or closing the window, instead of choosing "disconnect," remain in the chat room list anywhere from 1-4 minutes."

This is the standard operation of the chat room when a user does not logout correctly. The chat room will attempt to update the users online status that may cause a few minutes.

Again, please accept my apologies for this delay in our response.

Jeff

An excellent non-answer...  :newp:

So, right now I'm up to my ears trying to finalize the website for Iron Fists dueling, but once I make some more headway on that I have some ideas for the chat interface if we want to implement them.  Probably another week or two as long as the real life job thing I have doesn't get in the way.

I believe that I could add some links to the big grey space with the GR graphics at the top and move the functions that don't directly work with the chat interface up there.  eg:  chat logs, drow translator, google search, arcade link.   In the space that frees up, I could put in 1 click buttons for bold, underline and italic.  I have to go through the code still, but I think that should be relatively easy to do.

Other problems I *might* be able to help with from the list are:
* Some Instant Messenger (Private Chats) lose their maximize, minimize buttons - especially too long names.
* Users switching between subaccounts on the forum, forgetting to log themselves out of chat, send the error: C_LANG22 into the room
* The ability to highlight text and make it bold or italics. (now that we know BBcode works)
* The ability to have multiple SMF forum accounts logged in at once.

These I at least think I know where I would start looking, though they're pretty big "maybe's" as to whether or not I can fix them.  The rest of the list is beyond me though.  Of the above, how would you prioritize them?
 Nothing like a dagger, hidden easily and light weight for quick work.    This health potion is enough to restore light wounds (cuts, bruises, knock outs.) It may be enough to keep serious wounds together long enough to seek medical attention...but it isn't recommended for near-death health issues.    Better than coffee, one Stamina potion will pick up an exhausted warrior, student, or dragon mom and have them bright eyed and ready to go. Although users are strongly cautioned to limit their use as it only treats symptoms, not the cause.    A splendid long cloak dyed as black as a starless night. To keep a body warm or to keep them hidden in the shadows?   Electric blue for a reason. Do not lick!    Just don't ask where he hides them.    Stylish, portable, highly customized, and a mad-scientists dream come true. Or maybe just one elf's--glass tubes and miniature diabolical things that probably only make sense to Kalamere are inside.

GOOOOOOOOOD SUPER EARLY MORNING Kalamere! I hope that your Iron Fists are going awesome! (Hey, hey, pssst--do you wanna use GR's calender to advertise stuff?  :ida: )

I keep thinking that currently and personally, our main focus should be fixing the core functions of the chat first, before moving on to larger and bigger coding mountains. IE, priority for me, would be:
  • Fixing the blank IM (Private Chat) bug (Where users send each other an IM, they can hear it, but they can't see anything)
  • Fixing the Too-Long-Chat-Name screwing up minimize and maximize on IM's (Private Chats)
Then I can start paying you with bacon and beer to try and look into the larger things, such as the error: C_LANG22 and move on to multiple accounts. I feel like if we can get the chat version/program we have NOW stable, hurdling larger projects might be easier in the long run.

I am NOT the code elf here, though, so I am not sure what is easier said than done.
 You own a rock. It's a rock with a symbol on it. Nobody is sure what it does.    Light, flexible, and handy for the acrobatic types.    A versatile vegetable for cakes, stews, meals and rabbits.    RhyDin's finest home made brew. Random and questionable contents which all lead to the same thing: getting stupefied drunk. Warning label reads: May cause fire breathing, murderous rampages, embarassing confessions, illusions of grandeur, overly affectionate thoughts and gut rot. Drink at your own risk.    A heavy long steel shield, enchanted with nature and shaped to resemble a leaf. The shield is said to be able to cloak the bearer in forested areas three times a day.    Madam Curio's specialty potion. One potion can restore either a tiny tidbit of health, stamina, mana (magic), strength, dexterity, perceptions or intelligence with one draw back: the effect is random and the drinker has no idea which will be bolstered.   A steel shuriken, or throwing star. Easily concealed, these weapons can be thrown or hidden in the palm for slashing or puncturing.    A deep green ring carved from spinel. Engraved are shapes of twisting vines that seem to reach out. This ring is ensorcelled to allow the wearer to cast Tangling Vines, a spell to trap a target, twice a day.   A necklace with the mummified claw of a supposed harpy. It is said the necklace may grant the wearer feather fall once a day.    This health potion is enough to restore light wounds (cuts, bruises, knock outs.) It may be enough to keep serious wounds together long enough to seek medical attention...but it isn't recommended for near-death health issues.    A splendid long cloak dyed as black as a starless night. To keep a body warm or to keep them hidden in the shadows?

I should totally do that  =)   I hope to have things ready for character registrations and public announcements in the next day or two.  I'll put something on the calendar and some informational stuff here too.  Team Dueling, btw, is a great way for people who are not big time duelists to get involved in the sports!  It's a one duel a week, max, kinda thing and we always welcome more teams regardless of their experience levels.

Your #1 issue there was not on my list of things I think I'm capable of fixing.  =P  (how do we not have a emoticon for this?)

I can take a look at #2 though.  I have some ideas as to what may be causing it.  If I'm right it shouldn't be too hard.
